Keep Your Heart

“Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life” – Proverbs 4:23

No one starts out life to be in debt forever with no control over their finances. No one starts out in a career just to have it fail. No one starts any project with the intention of failure. We do things that we like or that we think we will like and do them with the intention of succeeding. But sometimes, at the end of the road, lies nothing but issues and problems.

The Bible says that a good portion of those issues can all be laid at the feet of our own hearts. The heart being referenced here is not the organ sitting inside your chest, but our soul and spirit. What makes us, us! And our hearts are like a sponge. Everything that goes through our mind, good or bad, makes an impression. The thoughts we linger on…the private words we don’t dare say out loud but allow to stay in our mind….the comparison to someone else’s prosperity….the complaining thought about how everything is stacked against us.

Make no mistake, what we allow to live on the inside will shape the person we become on the outside. This is why Proverbs says to keep our heart’s with all diligence. To keep something means to defend, care for, teach, and protect. The scripture says we are to do that with all diligence. Not just sometimes or occasionally. All the time always.

Why? Because many of the issues we experience and try to excuse as someone else’s fault are really the result of our own failure to keep and protect our heart from sin. This is true in all areas of life, but especially in our finances.

No one intends for the “issues of life” to arrive…but they do. In our finances, it looks like debt, living paycheck to paycheck, no rainy-day fund, no backup plan if something goes wrong. No margin.

Trying to fix the finances before the heart is the cart before the horse. The scripture says that the “issues of life” come from our hearts…not our money. Fix that first.

And identifying what our hearts are set on is not hard. Our money is our heart’s residential address. Just look at the things we are spending money on and there is the answer. Now the question is, do we like where it’s living? All progress starts by telling the truth. If we don’t like what we see, it’s time to make some changes.

Many things can help with this, but one of them is having someone in your corner who can help you, encourage you, and keep you accountable. This is where a financial coach comes into play.
